The Only 3 Things You Actually Need to Publish Your Book

The Only 3 Things You Actually Need to Publish Your Book

If you've spent any time researching how to publish your book, you've probably been overwhelmed by the endless list of "must-haves." Every expert seems to have a different opinion on what you absolutely need before you can publish.

Here's the truth: After helping over 140 authors publish 270+ books, we've learned that there are really only three essential ingredients you need to independently publish your book. Everything else is just noise.

1. An Awesome Cover

Your book cover isn't just decoration—it's your first and most important marketing tool.

When we were working with a subsidy publisher years ago, we made it clear what we wanted for our cover. They sent back something completely different—abstract art that had nothing to do with the contemporary Christian novel we'd written. Their response? "We didn't think you really wanted that."

But we did. And we were right to insist on it.

Here's what your cover needs to do:

  • Give readers an immediate glimpse of what's inside
  • Fit within your genre's visual language
  • Display your name and title prominently
  • Tell a mini-story about your book

The best way to create an awesome cover?

Go look at what's actually selling in your genre. Visit bookstores, browse online retailers, and study the top 20 books in your category. Unless you already have a massive platform and devoted following, your cover needs to look like it belongs on the shelf next to those bestsellers.

Your readers need to recognize your book as part of the genre they love. Save the abstract artistic experiments for after you've built an audience that will buy anything you write.

2. A Formatted Interior

You need two different formats, and they serve two different purposes:

Paperback formatting needs to look good. When readers open your book, the layout should be professional and appropriate for your genre. A romance novel will look different from a technical manual, and both will look different from a children's book. Every element—from margins to chapter headings to font choices—contributes to the reading experience.

Ebook formatting needs to perform well. Unlike a paperback where everything is fixed on the page, ebooks need to adapt to different devices and screen sizes. The technical requirements are completely different from print.

We typically create the paperback format first, get author approval on all the content and layout, then adapt it for ebook. This ensures everything is proofed and finalized before we create the digital version.

The bottom line: Your content deserves professional presentation. Readers can immediately tell the difference between a professionally formatted book and one that wasn't done properly.

3. The Metadata

Metadata is a fancy word for "information about you and your book." Think of it as your book's name, address, and phone number in the digital world.

Your metadata includes:

  • Author name (or pen name)
  • Book title and subtitle
  • Genre and category selections
  • Keywords for discoverability
  • ISBN information
  • Banking details for royalty payments
  • Tax information (like your W-9)
  • Book description

And much more

We use a form with 50+ fields to capture all the necessary metadata in one place. It might seem overwhelming at first, but having all this information organized makes the publishing process smooth and professional.

The metadata is what helps readers find your book and ensures you get paid properly for your work. Skip this step or do it poorly, and your book might as well be invisible.

That's It. Really.

Notice what's NOT on this list:

- You don't need a traditional publisher

- You don't need thousands of dollars

- You don't need a massive social media following first

- You don't need to wait for someone to give you permission

With these three ingredients—an awesome cover, a formatted interior, and complete metadata—you have everything you need to publish your book and make it available to readers around the world.

The technology and platforms available today have made independent publishing more accessible than ever. You haven't missed the boat. In fact, the last few years have brought millions of new readers into the digital book market. The opportunity is bigger now than it's ever been.

Your Next Step

If you're sitting on a finished manuscript wondering what comes next, start with these three essentials. Get them right, and you'll be ready to publish like a professional—without the gatekeepers, the rejection letters, or the wait.

Your book deserves to find its readers. These three ingredients are your ticket to making that happen.
